Basic Oatmeal

Oatmeal i.e. Food of the Gods. Pure unadulterated deliciousness. Yummy simplicity at it's finest.


Now all you need to create this breakfast amazingness is:
(serves 1)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup liquid of choice (milk, water, a combination of the two etc)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (optional, but gives the oatmeal an extra bit of fluffiness and fills you up for longer, plus chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse so why not!)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • whatever add-ins/flavourings your heart desires
  • 1/2 banana, mashed 
There are two cooking options for oatmeal - stove top vs microwave. The stove top method produces fluffier, thicker (better tasting, in my opinion) oats but the microwave method is almost equally as good! Plus it saves a bunch of time if you're rushing out the door, but are still craving a warming bowl of oats.

How to cook

Microwave:

  1. Mix the oats, mashed banana, chia seeds and any dry add-ins into a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Pour liquid on top of the oats, add any liquidised add-ins and stir to combine.
  3. Place in the microwave for 90 seconds. To avoid the oats over-fluffing and overflowing in the microwave, take the bowl out at this point and give it a bit of a stir before returning it to the microwave for at least another 60 seconds, or until they reach your desired consistency. (Note: if using milk, you'll need to microwave for a bit longer - approximately 3-4 minutes in total).
  4. Once done, take the oats out of the microwave and serve with whatever you like! Now sit down, relax, and immerse yourself in a wondrous bowl of oatmeal!

Stove Top:
  1. Mix the oats, mashed banana, chia seeds and any dry add-ins into a saucepan.
  2. Pour the liquid into the saucepan, along with any liquidised add-ins. Turn the heat to medium-high and stir to combine.
  3. Cook the oats for about 10 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed. Make sure to stir regularly over this time to avoid the oats going gluggy and sticking to the saucepan! 
  4. Once done, pour the oats into a bowl and serve with whatever you like! Now once again, sit down, relax, and enjoy the deliciousness!
